Pioneers rock Ripon

The UW-Platteville men's soccer team knew it would have its hands full with 7-2 Ripon College Sunday afternoon. The task was made even tougher when senior goalkeeper Chris Robbins was called for a red card attempting to stop a Ripon breakaway just 15 minutes into the game.

The Pioneers, however, showed their grit and beat the Red Hawks 3-1 to cap a successful Homecoming weekend for all UW-Platteville teams.

The Pioneers got on the board one minute in the second half on an own-goal by Ripon. Thirteen minutes later, the Pioneers put the ball in the net themselves with a goal from Tommy Linstroth, assisted by Matt Lee. After Ripon scored in the 80th minute, the Pioneers executed a beautiful play from a free kick. T.J. Fistrovich passed left to Lee, who used some great screens that shielded the Ripon goalie and shot the ball past him.

With the victory, the Pioneers improved to 4-7 overall.

On Friday, the Pioneers battled top-ranked and defending national champion Wheaton before 2,700 fans in Wheaton. The Pioneers tied the game Crusaders at 1-1 on an Aaron Gould goal 10:16 into the contest. The game remained tied for 29 minutes before the undefeated Crusaders scored again. They notched one more score before halftime and went on to a 7-1 victory.

Pioneers stop Luther

Nate Schroeder scored two first-half goals, and UW-Platteville goalkeeper Chris Robbins ensured that would be enough with 14 saves and a rare assist, as the Pioneer men's soccer team defeated host Luther 2-1 Monday night.

Schroeder scored just 8:57 into the contest on an assist from Vann Maxson. The Norse tied the score at 26:02. Robbins answered with a booming kick that Schroeder took, dribbled downfield and rifled a shot past the Luther goalie.

Even though Luther outshot the Pioneers 30-10, Robbins and the defense made the lead hold up. The school's all-time leader in almost every goalkeeping category, Robbins saved 14 shots on net.

UWP improved to 4-6 on the year, while Luther fell to 7-4. The Pioneers return to action Sunday at 2 p.m. for the Homecoming match with Ripon College.
