UW-Platteville defeats Carroll College 2-1 to advance to Sweet 16.
The University of Wisconsin – Platteville Men's Soccer team defeated Carroll College 2-1 Sunday afternoon to advance to the third round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Both team's nicknames are Pioneers so it was a matchup of Pioneers versus the Pioneers. UW-Platteville drew first blood against Carroll when senior Chris Brown went up high to head in a corner kick to give UW-Platteville the lead 1-0 in the 34th minute.
Then just six minutes later in the 40th minute fellow senior Brandon Chmiel stepped up to take a free kick from about 30 yards out. Chmiel floated a high shot and the Carroll goalkeeper, who was screened on the shot, could not find the ball and it went bouncing into the goal. UW-Platteville took their 2-0 lead into halftime. The second half was a half of defense for the Pioneers as junior goalkeeper Ian Christensen keep Carroll College scoreless.
Carroll College was able to score a goal late in the game to cut their deficit to 2-1 but could not score the equalizer. UW-Platteville closed out the remained of the game to secure the victory.
UW-Platteville advances to the third round and will face Loras College at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa at 7:30 p.m. UW-Platteville defeated Loras College earlier in the season 2-1 in Platteville, WI. The Sweet 16 appearance for UW-Platteville is the first appearance in school history.
