Pioneers give awards

Trigg Knerr earned the UW-Platteville soccer team's Pioneer of the Year award.

Junior defender Trigg Knerr (Mukwonago, WI) won both Pioneer of the Year (outstanding player) and Defensive Player of the Year. He totaled 14 points on the season with five goals and four assists. Junior forward Mike Schweinert (Menomonee Falls, WI/Sussex-Hamilton) won Offensive Player of the Year with 27 points on the season with 10 goals and seven assists. Freshman goalkeeper Jordan Knier (Manitowoc, WI) was named Rookie of the Year with his 1.09 goals against average, 82 saves, and six shutouts on the season.

Both Knerr and Schweinert were named to the all-state honorable mention squad.

Pioneers end with win

Andy Sujecki scored twice to lead UW-Platteville to a 2-0 victory at Wisconsin Lutheran College Wednesday night.

Sujecki scored an unassisted goal at the 34-minute mark and on an assist from Brad Siman. Jordan Knier made three saves in the nets while recording the shutout.

The Pioneers finished the 2002 campaign with a 10-5-3 season, the eighth-best winning percentage in school history. In addition, with Wednesday's win, Coach Craig Smith became the second all-time winningest coach in Pioneer history. In his second year, Smith has a 21-13-3 record.

Titans beat Pioneers

Regionally ranked UW-Oshkosh beat UW-Platteville 2-0 in a men's soccer game Sunday in Oshkosh.

Nick Shebasta scored 3:02 into the game, and Derek Kasten added an insurance goal at 66:49.

The Titans, ranked fourth in the NCAA III Central Region, improved to 10-3-2 overall while the Pioneers fell to 9-5-3.

The Pioneers close their season Wednesday at Wisconsin Lutheran College in Waukesha.

Bucs tip Pioneers

Beloit College scored two first-half goals and turned back a relentless Pioneer attack in the second half to post a 2-1 men's soccer win Thursday.

The Pioneers played the second half in the Buccaneer end, but came up with just one goal. Senior defensive captain Bob Casper scored his first-ever goal (pictured above) in his last home game, taking a corner kick from Ben Peter and hitting a perfect header into the net.

The Pioneers had six shots on goal, compared to Beloit's four, and totalled 11 corner kicks to the Bucs' two.

Beloit, who got first-half goals from Aaron Whetstone and Michael Wolderman, improved to 9-2-2, while the Pioneers fell to 9-4-3.

Pioneers fall by a goal

Wartburg College scored late in the first half, then held on to beat visiting UW-Platteville 1-0 in men's soccer Tuesday.

Nick Wuertz scored at the 39:55 mark for the Knights. The Pioneers fired 16 shots at two Wartburg goalkeepers, but could not convert them into points. Jordon Knier made eight saves in the nets for the Pioneers.

Wartburg improved to 7-6-1 overall, while the Pioneers fell to 9-3-3. UW-Platteville has its last home match Thursday at 4 p.m. vs. Beloit College, who will bring an 8-2-2 record into the game.

Pioneers win in overtime

The Pioneer men beat visiting Edgewood College Sunday 2-1, thanks to Andy Sujecki's goal 4:37 into overtime. He took a feed over the top from Trigg Knerr and nailed the game-winner. Knerr scored the first goal of the game, off an assist from Mike Schweinert. The Pioneers improved to 9-2-3 overall.

Warhawks top Pioneers

UW-Whitewater handed UW-Platteville just its second men's soccer loss of the year Wednesday, as the host Warhawks beat the Pioneers 4-0.

The Warhawks, who have spent much of the year in national top 25 poll, improved to 12-2 overall, while the Pioneers fell to 8-2-3.

The Warhawks scored three times in the first half and 2:28 into the second half for the victory.

The Pioneers play host to Edgewood College Sunday at 1 p.m.

Pioneers blank Dubuque

The UW-Platteville men's soccer team defeated University of Dubuque 1-0 on Sunday in Dubuque, IA. Trigg Knerr scored the only goal for the game on a penalty kick in the first half of play to put the Pioneers up by one. Dubuque wasn't able to answer and remained scoreless as UWP came away with their eighth win of the season. The Pioneers are 8-1-3.

The Pioneers travel to UW-Whitewater (11-2) on Wednesday to take on the 21st ranked team in the nation as part of a double header with the Pioneer women. The men will play at 1:30 p.m. and the women will play at 3:30.

Pioneers beat Cougars, 5-2

Five different UW-Platteville players scored, as the men's soccer team won a wild game at Concordia (IL) Friday, 5-2.

Brad Siman, Mark Staudinger and Andy Sujecki staked the Pioneers to a 3-0 first-half lead. Concordia narrowed the gap to 3-1 by halftime, but Curt Frey scored less than two minutes into the second half to restore the three-goal advantage. Eleven minutes later, Trigg Knerr scored on a penalty kick for a 5-1 lead. Jordon Knier went 75 minutes in the goal, allowing one score and recording four saves. Josh Ritger went the final 15 minutes, allowing just one goal on a penalty kick.

The Pioneers improved to 7-1-3 overall, while the Cougars fell to 5-10.

UWP plays at Dubuque Sunday, scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.

Pioneers blank M.S.O.E.

The UW-Platteville soccer program unveiled its brand-new scoreboard Saturday afternoon. The Pioneer men, however, refused to let Milwaukee School of Engineering test the visitor's scoring column.

The Pioneers blanked M.S.O.E. 2-0, improving to 6-1-3 overall. After a scoreless first half, Andy Sujecki scored just 25 seconds into the second period, assisted by Curt Frey. Jeremy Kastner, with an assist from Michael Hardyman, provided an insurance goal in the waning minutes.

Jordon Knier earned the shutout in the net, saving two shots from M.S.O.E. (now 3-6-1 on the year).

The Pioneers play at the University of Dubuque Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Pioneers fall at Coe

The UW-Platteville men's soccer team was upset at Coe College Tuesday night, suffering its first loss of the year, a 3-0 setback.

The Pioneers out-shot the Kohawks 15-9, but couldn't get the ball in the net. UWP is now 5-1-3 on the year, while Coe is 2-7. The Pioneers played once again without the injured Mike Schweinert, who had 10 goals in the first five games.

Pioneers tie Lakeland

UW-Platteville men's soccer team rallied to tie Lakeland College late in the second half with 5:29 left to play keeping them without a loss for the year. Lakeland's the first goal of the game late in the first half but the Pioneers came back with with a goal by forward Jeremy Kastner to tie the game 1-1. UWP and Lakeland remained tied after two overtimes.

UWP is now 5-0-3 overall and travels to Coe College on Tuesday.

Pioneers, Duhawks tie

Playing without the second-leading scorer in the nation, UW-Platteville tied Loras College 1-1 in double overtime Friday in Dubuque.

Mike Schweinert, with 10 goals in six games, sat out the contest with a pulled leg muscle. Brad Siman picked up the scoring, recording an unassisted goal 22:07 into the contest. The Duhawks tied the score in the 82nd minute, and neither team was able to score in overtime.

The Pioneers are now 5-0-2, while Loras is 4-2-2.

Knerr, Knier lift Pioneers

Trigg Knerr scored on a penalty kick, lifting UW-Platteville to a 1-0 victory over Lawrence University Wednesday in Appleton, Wis.

Knerr rifled his shot past the Viking goalkeeper at the 63:53 mark, and the Pioneer defense made the goal stand up the entire game. Jordon Knier earned the shutout in the nets, stopping six Viking stops.

The Pioneers remained unbeaten with a 5-0-1 mark, while the Vikings fell to 1-4. UW-Platteville plays at Loras Friday at 2:30 (followed by the women's game at 4:30), then plays host to Lakeland Sunday in a men's-women's doubleheader, beginning at 1 p.m.

UWP douses Prairie Fire

Mike Schweinert scored three goals and two assists, leading UW-Platteville to a 6-0 men's soccer victory over Knox Wednesday at the UWP Soccer Bowl.

Schweinert, who was second in all of NCAA III in goals last year, already has 10 goals in five games for the unbeaten (4-0-1) Pioneers. He scored the first two of the game, then set up Brad Siman with a short crossing pass for Siman to drill the ball in the net. Mark Staudinger assisted on the first two goals, and then on Schweinert's third to begin the second half. Jeremy Kastner and David Moser each recorded their first goals of the year within a 1:07 span midway through the second half.

The defense, captained by Bob Casper, held the Prairie Fire (1-2) to a single shot, which goalkeeper Jordon Knier saved.

The Pioneers are now off until traveling to Lawrence next Wednesday.

Pioneers beat Yellowjackets

Visiting UW-Platteville pounded UW-Superior 6-0 in men's soccer action Saturday, improving to 3-0-1 on the year.

Troy McConachie and Mike Schweinert each scored twice for the Pioneers, with McConachie earning two assists and Schweinert one. Trigg Knerr and Michael Hardyman also scored goals, while Knerr, Jeremy Kastner and David Moser recording assists.

Jordon Knier (75 minutes) and Matt Halweg combined on the shutout in the nets.

The Pioneers return to action Wednesday at home against Knox. The game, which follows the women's match against UW-La Crosse, will start at approximately 5 p.m.

OT penalty kick gives UWP win

Mike Schweinert scored on a penalty kick 10 minutes into overtime, giving UW-Platteville a 2-1 men's soccer victory over St. Scholastica Friday in Duluth.

Schweinert drilled home the game winner at the 100-minute mark. His goal at the 76:48 mark tied the contest and forced the overtime session. The junior, who was second in NCAA III in goals scored last year, has five goals in three games.

Jordon Knier earned the win in the nets with seven saves and had plenty of help from the defense. The Pioneers out-shot the Saints 16-7.

UW-Platteville, 2-0-1 on the year, visits UW-Superior Saturday afternoon.

Pioneers beat Clarke

The UW-Platteville men's soccer team earned its first win of the season by beating host Clarke 3-1 Monday afternoon.

Mike Schweinert scored an unassisted goal right before the end of the first half, then added a goal at the 68-minute mark. Andy Sujecki assisted on the second score. Clarke's Brian Stith scored with 14 minutes remaining, but the Pioneers' Sujecki answered less than two minutes later with a bicycle kick from 18 yards out to restore the two-goal advantage.

Jordon Knier saved five shots in recording his first collegiate win. The Pioneers improved to 1-0-1, while the Crusaders fell to 0-2.

Pioneers, V-Hawks battle to tie

Viterbo University scored two goals 1:47 apart late in the game to force a tie with the host UW-Platteville men's soccer team Saturday in the season opener for both squads.

The Pioneers took a 1-0 halftime lead on a beautiful direct kick by Mike Schweinert, who crossed the ball from the left and just got it in the right side of the net. UWP increased the lead to 2-0 on a Mark Staudinger goal, assisted by Schweinert, 10 minutes into the second half.

The visiting V-Hawks used a break-away goal at the 90-minute mark and a short shot 1:47 later to force the 2-2 tie. Neither team was able to score in 30 minutes of overtime.
