UW-Platteville Moves into Regional Rankings and Defeats Lakeland, 4-0
Just minutes prior to the game, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's soccer team moved into the national regional rankings for the first time since 2008. The Pioneers are currently No. 8 in the latest NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division III Men's North Regional Rankings.
Later, in the night, the Pioneers proved their ranking with a 4-0 win over Lakeland on Tuesday night at Pioneer Stadium. With the 4-0 win, UW-Platteville has now outscored its first six opponents by a 19-3 margin.
UW-Platteville (5-1) scored twice within 28 seconds in the first half to go ahead in the first 45 minutes. In the first half, the Pioneers outshot the visitors by a convincing 17 to 1 margin. The first goal came when freshman William Pretto took care of a rebound shot and chipped it in at the 31st minute. Seconds later, Tenzin Tsenor scored to put the Pioneers up by a 2-0 margin.
The Pioneers controlled possession in the second half, much like the first half, Brandon Chmiel stretched the lead to 3-0 for UW-Platteville in the 57th minute when he got a ball from the backfield, then went one on one with the Lakeland goalkeeper for his fourth goal of the season.
Seven minutes later, the Pioneers added their final goal of the contest when Mark Feltner set up a crossing pass to Chris Brown from 18 yards out for the 4-0 lead. UW-Platteville goalkeeper Ian Christensen made two saves on the evening for his third shutout of the young season. Chmiel paced an attack that outshot Lakeland by a 26 to 4 margin with a team-high six shots including three of which came on goal.
Next, UW-Platteville will travel to the state of Minnesota for its next two contests. First, they will Macalaster on Friday, Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. and Augsburg on Sunday, Sept. 16 at 12:30 p.m.
