The UW-Platteville men's soccer team played to its first tie of 2011 when they tied host Carleton, 1-1 in Northfield, Minnesota on Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers (2-1-1) were looking to extend its winning streak to three games. Carleton (1-1-1) managed to out shoot the visitors by a 21-14 margin in the tie.
Despite the discrepancy in the shots, the two teams played to a tie. The Pioneers got on the board first in the 12th minute when Richard Rowell scored his second goal of the season. The sophomore navigated his way through the Carleton defense before setting up a one-touch shot past the keeper for the early lead.
The Pioneers held a 1-0 advantage until the Knights tied it in the opening minutes of the second half in the 48th minute when Miles Silbert sent a shot between a pair of Platteville defenders to the back of the net to tie the contest at 1.
In the final minutes of regulation, UW-Platteville's Mark Ciszewski and Brandon Chmiel each fired shots that came up short to send the contest into overtime. In the extra session, an Anthony Heller shot was blocked in the first overtime marked the best opportunity for the Pioneers.
The Knights mounted a threat in the second overtime session with three shots at the UW-Platteville defense. Answering the threat and stepping up to the challenge was Pioneer goalkeeper Jared Kuehl, who made nine saves in the tie to preserve the tie.
The next contest for UW-Platteville comes when they face St. Olaf on Sunday, Sept. 11 at noon.
