Pioneer Men finish third at WIAC Championships
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's cross country team came away with a third-place finish with 92 points at the WIAC championships at Cole Acres Golf Course in Cuba City, Wis. hosted by UW-Platteville.
Senior Derek Fahrenkrug led the Pioneers, placing ninth in a time of 25:16.6, and freshman Ian LaMere came in close behind in a time of 25:23.3 placing 11th. Both earned second team all-conference honors. Sophomores Joel Walden and Sam Poser were 17th, 25:35.0, and 26th in a time of 25:52.6. Also scoring for the Pioneers was Matt Kocak finishing 29th with a time of 25:54.9. Other finishers were sophomores Matt Borneman, coming in 36th in 26:11.3, and Chris Czech, 44th in 26:35.7.
UW-LaCrosse captured the team title with 30 points. UW-Eau Claire was runner up with 89 points.
Tim Nelson of UW-Stout caught the lead and began to pull away from the rest of the field early never relinquishing first place, in a time of 24:34.2. UW-LaCrosse's Josh Dedering finished second in 24:59.7 followed by UW-Oshkosh's John Dewitt with a time of 25:04.5.
For four straight years, the Pioneers have finished in the top three at the WIAC Cross Country Championships.

The Pioneers will go on to compete at the NCAA Regional Meet Nov. 10 on the Winneconne Golf Course in Oshkosh, Wis.
