PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -- The University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team will travel to UW-Oshkosh on Tuesday for the first round of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament.
The Pioneers are the tournament's sixth-seed after falling at UW-Stevens Point last Saturday and finished league play 4-4. UW-Platteville has won 10 of their last 12 matches and defeated the Titans, 3-2 (19-25, 25-20, 25-14, 21-25, 15-12), during that stretch on Oct. 22 in Platteville.
The Titans earned the third-seed with a 5-3 WIAC record and defeated UW-Eau Claire on Nov. 1 to secure their spot in the tournament.
The Pioneers have faired well at Oshkosh during tournament time, winning the last three meetings at Kolf Sports Center. The last meeting occurred in 2011 when the fifth-seed Pioneers swept the host Titans.
The winner of Tuesday's match between UW-Oshkosh and UW-Platteville advances to meet second-seed and WIAC regular-season co-champion UW-Whitewater (25-7) at 5 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 7) in Stevens Point.
Another first-round contest scheduled for Tuesday has fifth-seed UW-Stout (20-9) visiting fourth-seed UW-River Falls (12-18). The winner of that contest will challenge top-seed and WIAC regular-season co-champion UW-Stevens Point (27-4) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in Stevens Point.
Matches for first and third places will be held Saturday (Nov. 8) in Stevens Point.
UW-Stevens Point won last year's WIAC Championship, while UW-Eau Claire captured the title in 2012, UW-Whitewater in 2011 and UW-Platteville in 2010.
The winner of the WIAC Championship receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.
