Mizgalski's double-double leads Pioneers past Carroll, 3-1

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -- In front of an electric crowd of 1,242, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville volleyball team defeated Carroll University 3-1 (25-12, 15-25, 25-18, 25-20) on Wednesday in Williams Fieldhouse.
Senior LeeAnn Mizgalski recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs to lead the Pioneers. Junior Jennifer Schmidt tallied 10 kills, while Lauren Gradyrecorded nine kills and five blocks. Lindsey Decker registered a team-best 16 digs, followed by setters Katie O'Malley and Allie Carter with 10 apiece.
The first two sets were a tale of two halves for UW-Platteville. In the opening set the Pioneers dominated Carroll with a .310 hitting percentage and four blocks, while Carroll posted a .000 percentage and just eight kills. In the second set the tide completely switched, as Carroll went on to hit .324, while UW-Platteville was plagued with seven attack errors for a .081 hitting percentage.
It took the UW-Platteville to go down 7-5 in the third set to get back on track, scoring the next five points, 10-7. Once the UW-Platteville took the lead, the Pioneers never gave it back, taking the third set 25-18.
In the fourth set the Pioneers managed to take a commanding 19-13, but Carroll was able to claw back, making it a two-point game, 22-20. After a UW-Platteville timeout, the Pioneers closed the door, scoring the next three points, 25-20.
The Pioneers return to conference action on Friday, when they host UW-Eau Claire for UW-Platteville's annual Dig for a Cure game. All fans that make a donation in the lobby before the game will receive free admission.
