Vogel leads UWP wrestlers to third
Chris Vogel earned second place at 149 pounds to lead the UW-Platteville wrestlers to third place at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships Saturday at UW-Oshkosh.
Vogel (So., Mayville) beat UW-Eau Claire's Jake Cimino and UW-Oshkosh's Brent Schneider 10-5 to advance to the title match before falling to UW-Stevens Point's Chet Zdanczewicz 10-4. Vogel improved his overall record to 24-8.
The Pioneers had three wrestlers take home third-place finishes.
Lucas Kern (Fr., Beaver Dam) beat UW-Stevens Point's Jason Kleinschmidt 13-5 in the third-place match at 141 pounds. Chris Aultman (Highland, Wis./Iowa-Grant HS) placed third at 165, stopping UW-La Crosse's Travis Lamers 7-3. Jason Eddy (Sr., Fennimore) whipped UW-River Falls' Eric Ruppert 14-1 and 16-0 and pinned UW-Whitewater's Josh Wade in 5:30 at 174 pounds.
Both John Schimming (Jr., Canton, Minn./Harmony) and Roy Forsyth (So., Arcadia) were fourth with two wins apiece at 133 and 184, respectively.
UW-La Crosse, the nation's fourth-ranked team, easily repeated as conference champion with 164.5 points. UW-Stevens Point was second with 127.5 points, followed by the Pioneers with 89.5, UW-Whitewater with 89, UW-Eau Claire with 86.5, UW-Oshkosh with 45.5 and UW-River Falls with 44.5
Pioneers head to WIAC championships
UW-Platteville will wrestle in the highly competitive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships Saturday at UW-Oshkosh.
Four league schools are nationally ranked, including UWP, which is 30th. UW-La Crosse is ranked fourth, and with four ranked individuals, is the favorite to repeat as conference champion. UW-Eau Claire is ranked 23rd nationally, and UW-Whitewater is 26th.
The Pioneers were runners-up in 1999, tying the school mark for the best finish ever. Coach Chris Walter's squad finished 11-7-1 in dual meets this year, including 4-2 against league schools.
Chris Vogel (Soph., Mayville) is the top rated Pioneer. He is ninth nationally at 149 pounds and carries a 22-7 record. Other top performers include Jason Eddy (Sr., Fennimore), 18-6 at 174; Roy Forsyth (So., Arcadia), 16-13 at 184 and 197; Lucas Kern (Fr., Beaver Dam), 18-11 at 141; and John Schimming (Jr., Canton, Minn.), 18-15 at 133. Derek Kraege, 12-7 at 184 and 197, will miss the tournament because of injuries.
Pioneer wrestlers split on the road
UW-Platteville split a pair of wrestling duals at Collegeville, Minn., Saturday, whipping Concordia-Moorhead 42-3 and falling to #14 ranked St. John's 26-13.
The Pioneers, ranked 30th in this week's national poll, are now 11-7-1.
Lucas Kern and Ryan Nash were both double winners for Coach Chris Walter's squad. Kern beat Concordia's Jason Dubord 15-7 and St. John's Mike Timm 9-8 at 141 pounds. Wrestling at 157, Nash beat CC's Rory Olson 10-5 and SJU's Mike Ritt 10-7.

Depleted Pioneers finish 5th at Luther, lose to Loras
A depleted UW-Platteville wrestling team lost 28-12 at Loras College Friday and placed fifth in the all-Lutheran Classic 2000 Saturday at Luther College, Decorah, Iowa.
The Pioneers were without Lucas Kern (16-11), Derek Kraege (12-7) and Jason Eddy (18-7), who have sustained injuries in the last 10 days, for the entire weekend and wrestled without Chris Vogel (21-7) Saturday.
John Schimming advanced to the championship Saturday at 133 pounds, defeating Luther's Casey Conover 4-1 and Wartburg's Joe Havig 11-1 before losing in the title match to Augustana's Jamie Pales 8-5.
Roy Forsyth, at 184, and Tim Egen, at 197, won consolation titles, while John Steinhauer fell in the consolation final at 125. Egen posted three wins on the day, including one over teammate Clint Biodrowski, while Forsyth and Steinhauer each won twice.
The Pioneers won three matches against Loras Friday, including a matchup of 20-win wrestlers. Chris Vogel defeated Craig Collins 9-7 at 149, handing Collins just his fifth loss against 20 wins. Vogel improved to 21-7.
Forsyth earned his second straight dual-meet pin, beating Anthony Pasquesi in 4:17. Schimming earned a victory at 133, beating Chris McMillin 7-2.
The 17th-ranked Duhawks improved to 13-5, while the 20th-ranked Pioneers fell to 10-6-1.

Warhawks edge Pioneers
UW-Whitewater knocked off UW-Platteville 19-15 in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual Tuesday in Whitewater.
The Warhawks won 6 of the 10 closely contested matches, improving to 7-5 on the year. The Pioneers, ranked 20th in NCAA III, fell to 10-5-1 overall.
Roy Forsyth earned 6 of the Pioneers' points by pinning Rob Szmanda in 3:45 at 184 pounds. Chris Vogel recorded win #20 on the year, beating the Warhawks' Tony Graziano 6-2 at 157 pounds. In one of the night's most exciting matches, UWP's Lucas Kern defeated Ben Schlueter with a takedown in overtime to win 7-5 at 141 pounds. Adam Anderson followed with a win at 149 pounds, beating Jason Mooney 8-5.
The Pioneers return to action Friday at Loras College, then wrestle in the Luther College Invitational Saturday.

Pioneers fall to fourth-ranked Eagles
Fourth-ranked UW-La Crosse beat 20th-ranked UW-Platteville 32-9 in a wrestling match Tuesday in UWL's Mitchell Hall.
The Eagles won the NCAA III National Dual Championships erlier this month and were coming off close loses to Purdue and the University of Wisconsin over the weekend. They captured 8 of the 10 matches Tuesday.
UWP's John Schimming continued his impressive streak with a win at 133 pounds. Schimming, who won all four of his matches last week, pinned the Eagles' Kevin Biermeier in 6:40.
Chris Vogel recorded a pair of takedowns in the second period and held off Pat Kearns 7-5 at 149 pounds. Vogel improved to 19-7, while Kearns fell to 19-9.
Derek Kraege gave nationally ranked Bart Bly all he could handle at 197, before Bly prevailed 5-3 and improved his overall mark to 23-4. John Steinhauer also lost a close match, 6-4 at 125 pounds.
The Pioneers fell to 10-4-1 and will be off until next Tuesday, when they travel to UW-Whitewater for a 6 p.m. match.

UWP takes title at Pioneer Duals
UW-Platteville won all three of its wrestling matches to finish first at the Pioneer Duals Saturday in Williams Fieldhouse.
The Pioneers beat UW-River Falls 30-13, UW-Eau Claire 21-16 and Concordia (Wis.) 41-0. UW-Eau Claire was second with two wins, while UW-River Falls was 1-2 and Concordia 0-3.
The Pioneers increased their season record to 10-3-1 with the victories.
Four UWP wrestlers were 3-0 on the day. Willie Slayton won his first two matches by pin and was perfect at 165; John Schimming was 3-0 at 133; Lucas Kern won two matches by forfeit and one over Concordia at 141; and Jason Eddy won twice at 174 and once at 184. In addition, the Pioners were 3-0 at 149 pounds, with Chris Vogel winning twice and Tim Swenson once.
Ryan Nash, at 157, and Derek Kraege, at 197, won two matches, while Derrick Casper (174) and Tim Egen (197) both were 1-0. John Steinhauer added a technical fall against Concordia at 125.

Pioneers beat Cornell, 34-6
Willie Slayton began Thursday's match with an overtime win, and the UW-Platteville wrestling team rolled from there, beating Cornell 34-6 in Williams Fieldhouse.
The match started at 165 pounds, and Slayton edged Adam Peterson 7-5 with a takedown in the extra session.
After Cornell's Jason Dix notched his 20th victory with a hard-fought 3-1 decision over Jason Eddy at 174, the Pioneers won the seven matches. Derek Kraege and John Schimming both registered pins during that stretch. Kraege pinned Eric Byrne in 3:49 at 197 pounds, while Schimming stopped Andrew Birkestrand 4:36 into the 133-pound contest.
Chris Vogel earned a majority decision at 149, while Roy Forsyth, Clint Biodrowski and Lucas Kern earned decisions. John Steinhauer received a forfeit at 125 pounds.
The Pioneers improved to 7-3-1 overall, while Cornell fell to 1-9.
UW-Platteville closes its home schedule Saturday with the Pioneer Duals. The Pioneers will wrestle UW-Eau Claire at noon, UW-River Falls at 2 p.m. and Concordia (Wis.) at 4 p.m.

Pioneers place 5th out of 17 teams
In one of the Midwest's most competitive wrestling tournaments of the year, UW-Platteville placed fifth out of 17 teams at the Cornell College Matmen Invitational Saturday in Mount Vernon, Iowa.
Upper Iowa won the two-day event with 109 points, followed by Luther with 106, Buena Vista, 87.5, St. John's 78.5 and UW-Platteville, 76.5. The Pioneers, ranked 18th in NCAA III, finished ahead of such teams as Wartburg, Coe Messiah, Penn., Simpson, and Loras as well as fellow WIAC schools UW-Eau Claire and UW-Oshkosh.
Jason Eddy had the Pioneers' best finish, advancing all the way to the 174-pound championship match before losing to Cornell's Jason Dix, 6-3.
The busiest wrestler was Chris Vogel, who battled back to take third place at 149 pounds. He went 7-1 for the tournament. Roy Forsyth, with a 4-1 record, also placed third at 184 pounds. Derek Kraege, with a 3-2 record at 197, was fifth, while Lucas Kern, 2-3 at 141, placed sixth.
Other Pioneers with multiple victories were John Schimming, 3-2 at 133; Derrick Casper, 2-2 at 174; Nathan Stauffer, 3-2 at 184; and Tim Egen, 2-2 at heavyweight.
The Pioneers return to the Williams Fieldhouse mats Thursday for a match with the Cornell Rams, beginning at 7 p.m.
UW-Platteville is 6-3-1 in dual meets this season.
Pioneers are 1-1-1 at Coe
UW-Platteville experienced a little bit of everything at the Coe College Wrestling Duals Saturday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The Pioneers were 1-1-1, beating league rival UW-Eau Claire 22-19, losing to the host Kohawks 23-15 and tying Augustana, Ill. 24-24.
Jason Eddy turned in the best day for the Pioneers, going undefeated at 174 pounds. Eddy beat Coe's Zak Gordon 6-4, pinned Augustana's Scott Harris in 5:00, and beat Eau Claire's Mark Phillips 2-0. Eddy raised his record to a team-best 11-3.
Both Roy Forsyth (184) and Derek Krage (197) were 2-1, with each receiving one forfeit vs. Coe and earning pins vs. Augustana. Krage pinned Mike Cubalchini in 2:44, and Forsyth pinned the Vikings' Chad Krnac in 3:50.
The Pioneers head back to Iowa next weekend for the Cornell College Invitational in Mount Vernon.
Pioneers dump UW-Stevens Point
UW-Platteville edged WIAC rival UW-Stevens Point 20-15 in a wrestling dual Thursday at Williams Fieldhouse.
Lucas Kern (141) and Derek Kraege (197) won majority decisions for the Pioneers, who improved to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference. John Schimming (133) and Chris Vogel (149) posted decisions, and Jason Eddy received a forfeit at 174 pounds.
Kern and Eddy both registered their team-high eighth wins.

Pioneers take 5th at Simpson
UW-Platteville wrestlers went 2-2 and placed fifth at the Simpson Duals Saturday in Indianola, Iowa.
The Pioneers beat the host Storm 26-17 in the fifth-place match. Earlier in the day, the Pioneers lost 30-9 to Coe, beat Ellsworth 24-12 and lost 43-6 to Division II Minnesota State-Mankato. Iowa State, ranked number one in Division I, won the tournament.
Jason Eddy at 174 posted three wins against just one loss to lead the Pioneers (4-2). Derek Krage and Tim Egen each had a pair of victories.
The Pioneers return to the mat Thursday night when they play host to UW-Stevens Point at 7 p.m.
Pioneers pin UW-Oshkosh
Clint Biodrowski and John Schimming recorded pins, and Jason Eddy won on a technical fall to power UW-Platteville to a 37-7 wrestling victory over UW-Oshkosh Thursday in Williams Fieldhouse.
Biodrowski pinned Eric Maloney in 1:03 at 197 for the Pioneers' quickest pin of the year, while Schimming began the match with a 4:00 p[in of Chris Romanowitz at 133. Eddy defeated Titan 174-pounder Nick Jasurda 5-0.
Chris Aultman, at 157, and Roy Forsyth, at 184, earned majority decisions, while Lucas Kern just missed a majority decision at 141, winning 17-10. The Pioneers' John Steinhauer received a forfeit at 125.
The Pioneers improved their record to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matches. UW-Oshkosh fell to 0-2, 0-1.
UW-Platteville heads to Indianola, Iowa, Saturday for the Simpson duals. Beginning at 9 a.m., the Pioneers face Coe, Ellsworth Community College and Division II Minnesota-Mankato in the first three matches, then depending on how their fare, will face another opponent at 3 p.m. The field includes the top ranked team in Division I, Iowa State.

Pioneers beat Luther
UW-Platteville opened its dual portion of the wrestling season Saturday with a 23-12 victory over Luther College in Williams Fieldhouse.
The Pioneers received majority decisions from Chris Aultman at 157 pounds and Jason Eddy at 174. Lucas Kern at 149, Chris Vogel at 157 and Clint Biodrowski at 197 also earned wins on the mat, while Derrick Casper received a forfeit at 184 pounds.
Last season, the two teams tied 17-17 and both went on to qualify several wrestlers for the NCAA Division III national tournament.
UW-Platteville is back in action Dec. 2 at home against UW-Oshkosh at 7 p.m.
