T.J. Wunnicke Named Most Outstanding Wrestler to Lead UW-Platteville at 2011 MSOE Invitational
University of Wisconsin-Platteville junior T.J. Wunnicke posted four first period pins en route to first place honors and being named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the 2011 MSOE Invitational on Saturday.
The Dodgeville, Wisconsin native was not on the mat in the second period for any of his matches. Wunnicke, who was the No. 1 seed at 133 pounds, started the day with a fall at the 2:51 mark over Ian Peppel of St. Olaf. He followed that up with a pin at the 1:18 mark of David Rosenau of UW-Oshkosh in the quarterfinals and at the 1:10 mark over Jesse Huggins of Concordia in the semifinals. In the championship, he pinned Marcus Lubner of Concordia in 1:26. Now for the season, Wunnicke has recorded seven pins and all of them in the first period.
At 141 pounds, unseeded Tyler Henken was fourth at 141 pounds. He bounced back from a first round loss and worked his way through the wrestlebacks to finish fourth. In the wrestleback semifinals, he posted a win over No. 4 seeded T.J. Peretti of Central.
Another Pioneer who finished fourth was Austin Holland at 174 pounds. He bounced back from a first round loss to win his next two matches, including a consolation semifinals win over Tommy Van Renterghem of Central, 7-2.
Also for the Pioneers, Eric MacFarland at 157 pounds and Matt Scott at 197 pounds each finished sixth.
