Pioneers move to 5-1 with win

The UW-Platteville women's basketball team recorded another win Wednesday at Bo Ryan Court with a 71-42 win over Viterbo. For the first time since the 1995-1996 season, the Pioneers start the season off 5-1.

The Pioneers took a big lead in the opening of the first half, jumping ahead 18-3. The Pioneers pulled ahead to its biggest lead of the first half with a score of 27-9. The V-Hawks fought back and pulled within 16 going into half-time, with the Pioneers ahead 37-21.

UW-Platteville came out strong in the second half as well, only allowing the V-Hawks to score 21 points. The Pioneers had a five point run towards the end of the game on a free throw shot by Charity Stotmeister at 5:38, two free throw shots by Claire Poad at 4:36, and a layup by Stotmeister at 3:51, making the score 66-37. The final basket for the Pioneers was made by Calyn Bidlingmaier with 0:53 left on the clock, giving the Pioneers a 71-40 lead. The V-Hawks scored the final two points with 0:03 left on free throws by Dani Templin, ending with the win for the Pioneers.

Four of the Pioneers scored double-digits, led by Poad with 15 points and 8 rebounds. Stotmeister and Stacia Nemitz each added 14 points and Ashley Wolf added 13 points.

Templin and Emily Larson led the V-Hawks, each scoring 8 points. UW-Platteville moves to 5-1 while the V-Hawks fall to 2-6.

UW-Platteville will play its next game Saturday against UW-Superior at 1 p.m. on Bo Ryan Court.
