Pioneers edged by Eagles

UW-La Crosse scored the final three points to edge UW-Platteville 60-57 Saturday on Bo Ryan Court.

Dana Churchill made two free throws with 1:06 to play, breaking a 57-57 tie. After changes of possession, the Pioneers had three inside looks, but the ball wouldn't drop through the basket. The Eagles rebounded, and Melissa Lang made one of two free throws with 12.7 seconds left. The Pioneers could not get off a three-point attempt before the buzzer sounded.

UW-L improved to 14-6 overall and 6-5 in the WIAC, while the Pioneers fell to 10-9, 3-7.

Stacia Nemitz scored 16 points, Charity Stotmeister 15, and Claire Poad 13 for the Pioneers, who essentially went with a five-guard lineup. The pressing Pioneers made 14 steals and caused 23 turnovers.

Six-foot-4 center Danielle Frank made her first eight shots from the field and finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Churchill added 14 points for the Eagles, who led 29-22 at the break. La Crosse led by as many as 13 in the first half.
