Spartans hand UWP first loss

The UW-Platteville Pioneers women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season to the University of Dubuque Tuesday night, 73-71.

The Pioneers came out strong on the Spartans' Davison Court, going into half-time ahead by two with a score of 31-29 on a layup by Stacia Nemitz. But Dubuque pulled ahead for the majority of the second half. With 3:37 left in the game the Pioneers were down by six. UW-Platteville rallied the next six points and tied the game 69-69 on a layup by Liz Lawinger at 2:49, a pair of free throws by Dru Scheider at 1:33, and a layup by Nemitz with 1:25 left.

Dubuque then pulled ahead once again to 72-69 on free throws by Jennifer Nichols. The Pioneers came within one point with 1:06 on the clock on a layup by Charity Stotmeister. Dubuque secured the win on a free throw by Tena Stark with 0:27 left. The Pioneers missed two shots with 0:27 and 0:09 left.

Nemitz led the Pioneers with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Liz Lawinger had 13 points and 7 rebounds. Nemitz broke her career-high points for the second straight game, surpassing her previous 24 set on Nov. 21.

Dubuque was led by Nichols' 27 points. Dubuque improved to 2-2 on the season. UW-Platteville is now 3-1. The Pioneers will face Central College at 11 a.m. Saturday.
