Upset bid runs out of gas

January 21, 2009

UW-Platteville played perhaps its best half of basketball this season, taking a 36-32 halftime lead on third-ranked UW-Whitewater, before the host Warhawks rallied for a 76-62 victory Wednesday.

UWW improved to 16-1 overall and 7-1 in the WIAC, while the Pioneers fell to 5-11, 2-6.

The Pioneers jumped on the Warhawks early, scoring seven straight points for an 11-4 lead. They held that advantage the rest of the half, thanks to some timely shooting and stingy defense.

The Warhawks, held to 39.3 percent in the first half, made 18 of 30 shots (60 percent) in the second to take the win. UWW tied the game at 38, then took the lead for good on Heidi Sonntag's three-point shot, making it 41-38.

The Pioneers were still within 56-49 on Charity Stotmeister's jumper with 9:11 remaining, but the Warhawks then went on an 11-2 run, putting the game away.

Stotmeister led the Pioneers with 14 points, including 10 in the first half. Dru Schneider and Brianna Klaas each added 11. Schneider recorded her first career double-double with 10 rebounds.

Tiffany Morton and Dana Thompson led a balanced UWW attack with 12 points each, while Sonntag added 11.
