Slow start dooms Pioneers

January 10, 2009

Tenth-ranked UW-Stevens Point blew out to an 18-1 lead and went on to beat UW-Platteville 75-46 Saturday on Bo Ryan Court.

The Pioneers missed their first shots while falling behind by 17. The Pointers led 30-14 at the break, as the Pioneers shot just 10 percent (2-20).

UWP cut the deficit to 41-28, but the Pointers scored the next eight, with Cassie Bandow scoring the first four of that streak. The Pointers held at least 20 the rest of the night.

Britta Petersen scored 23, making 10-14 from the field, before fouling out. Janell Van Gomple added 11 and Katie Webber 10 for the Pointers, who improved to 13-1 overall and 5-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Lisa Grantman scored 11 and Ashley Callahan 10 for the Pioneers, who fell to 5-9, 2-4. All 10 of Callahan's points came from the line, as the Pioneers tied their record for second-most free throws in school history. UWP was 28-42 from the line, five made free throws shy of the 2003 record set against UW-Stout.

The Pioneers play host to UW-La Crosse Wednesday at 7 p.m.
