Pioneers open WIAC with win

Lisa Grantman, the lone UW-Platteville senior, scored five points and came up with a key steal in the final 40 seconds, lifting the Pioneers to a 76-70 win at UW-Superior Saturday in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener.

Grantman's three-point basket with 40 seconds remaining gave the Pioneers a 74-70 advantage. She then came up with the big steal, was fouled and sank two free throws with 16 seconds left to clinch the victory for the Pioneers.

UWP improved to 3-4 overall in their sixth road game of the season, while the Yellowjackets fell to 2-4.

Charity Stotmeister led the Pioneers with 15 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Grantman and Ashley Callahan each scored 12.

Callahan made made three of four free throws late in the game, bringing the Pioneers within 66-65. Grantman scored on a jumper to give the Pioneers a 67-66 advantage at 4:32, and Callahan followed with a layup 25 seconds later for a 69-66 lead. A Stotmeister basket gave the Pioneers a 71-68 lead, and after the Yellowjackets' Katie Zavodney made two free throws for a one-point game, Grantman hit the back-breaking three-pointer.

Ana Peterson led UWS with 18 points, while Kelsey Thingvold and Hailey Hart each scored 10. The Yellowjackets led by as many as 10 in the first half at 23-13 before the Pioneers cut the lead to 44-40 by halftime.

UWP returns to the road and the same direction Wednesday, playing at UW-Eau Claire.
