Record shot comes in UWP win

January 28, 2009

Lisa Grantman made her record-breaking shot, and UW-Platteville made it back to the win column with a 57-52 win over UW-Oshkosh Wednesday on Bo Ryan Court.

Grantman, a senior from Lomira, became UW-Platteville's all-time leader in three-point baskets. She began the game with a three-pointer, tying Jen Kneeland's 121, set in 1995-99. The record-breaker gave the Pioneers a 16-15 lead with 6:35 remaining in the first half.

"It feels great, but I owe a lot to my teammates," she said. "They've been skipping the ball to me, and I've been open for the three-pointers. It caught me by surprise, so I'm enjoying it all right now. I didn't know (about the record) until yesterday."

After Grantman's record three-pointer, the Pioneers held the lead for all but 38 seconds. UWP led 26-20 at the halftime and held the advantage until 8:19 remained in the game.

The Titans' Kelsey Myklebust scored on an outside jump shot, giving UWO a 39-38 advantage. On the Pioneers' next possession, Mallory Mau made a three-point shot from the top of the key, restoring the Pioneer advantage at 41-39. Grantman made two free throws, and Ashley Wolf scored on a field goal, making the lead 45-39.

UW-Oshkosh, who lost to UWP 76-70 in overtime Jan. 7, rallied within two points at 54-52 with 43 seconds left on Laura Ebben's two free throws. Stacia Nemitz made one of two from the line with 17.4 seconds remaining for a 55-52 lead, and the Titans' Shelby Churchill missed a potential tying three-point attempt in the final seconds. Nemitz rebounded the ball, was fouled and made both free throws with 2.4 ticks remaining for the final 57-52 score.

The Pioneers, who broke a four-game losing streak, improved to 6-12 overall and 3-7 in the WIAC, while the Titans fell to 6-13, 1-9.

"We're looking at it as we're 1-0, and we started a new season," Grantman said. "We had some lulls over break, but our intensity definitely picked up tonight."

Grantman finished with a game-high 21 points, while Nemitz added 11 points and 9 rebounds.

Michelle Boeder led the Titans with 17 points, while Ebbens had 10 and Churchill recorded 8 points and 11 rebounds.

Both teams made their season-lows in turnovers, with the Pioneers having nine and the Titans 10.

UW-Platteville plays host to UW-River Falls Saturday at 3 p.m. The Falcons are one game ahead of the Pioneers for sixth place in the WIAC, and the new league tournament takes only the top six.

"We definitely need to win if we have any chance to make the tournament, and that's where we want to be," Grantman said.
