Eagles beat Pioneers, 72-62

January 14, 2009

UW-La Crosse built a 38-22 halftime lead and held off host UW-Platteville 72-62 Wednesday on Bo Ryan Court.

The Eagles, who received votes in this week's D3hoops.com poll, improved to 11-4 overall and 3-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Pioneers fell to 5-10, 2-5.

The Pioneers trimmed a 23-point lead with 5:24 down to 70-62 on Brianna Klaas' three-point basket with 34 seconds remaining, but that is as close as they came. Emily Mattison's two free throws accounted for the final 72-62 score.

Mackenzie Hunter, the WIAC's leading scorer, had 24 points to pace the Eagles, who led the entire game. Dana Churchill added 11, and Lindsay Wahl nine.

Stacia Nemitz slashed her way to the basket for 15 points and pulled down seven rebounds for the Pioneers. Charity Stotmeister added 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Pioneers are off this weekend and return to action Wednesday at third-ranked UW-Whitewater.
