Pioneers earn Texas victory

November 22, 2008

UW-Platteville used a deep bench and an aggressive defense to beat host Texas-Tyler Saturday in front of 524 at the Herrington Patriot Center.

The Pioneer reserves outscored the Patriots 18-3, and UWP limited Tyler to 38.9 percent from the field in splitting their Texas games. UT-Dallas beat the Pioneers 78-64 Friday, while UT-Tyler beat 20th-ranked St. Benedict's 81-70 in overtime.

Stacia Nemitz, who has not played since 2006, scored a game-high 19 points to lead UWP. Lisa Grantman, named to the all-tournament team, added 18 Saturday to go along with her 23 Friday. UWP was forced to compensate for the loss of Vanessa Nemitz, who was injured in Friday's contest.

The Patriots led 46-43 at the break, but the Pioneers tied the score at 48. Nemitz hit a three-point basket and a layup for a 53-48 lead, and UWP never trailed again. Tyler sliced the deficit to 59-58, but Nemitz scored twice inside, sparking an 11-0 run. The Pioneers led by as many as 78-62 with 4:44 remaining and improved to 2-1 overall.

Ashley Wolf added 12 points for the Pioneers, who shot 43.5 percent from the field. Ashley Callahan added seven points and seven rebounds, and Charity Stotmeister scored six.

Becky Taylor scored 22, and Marci Trogus 19 for the Patriots (2-1), who held a commanding 55-36 advantage on the boards but missed 11 of their 12 three-point attempts.

The Pioneers make their home debut--and their only home appearance until Jan. 3--when they face Coe Tuesday at 7 p.m.
