UW-Platteville almost dug themselves out of an early 18-2 hole, but could not get all the way out as host UW-Stout and Julia Hirssig won 83-69 in Menomonie Saturday.

The Blue Devils jumped to the 18-2 lead and still led 26-7 before the Pioneers rallied. Melanie Walker scored four points, and Mallory Mau, Charity Stotmeister and Dru Schneider followed with field goals, making the score 26-17. Brianna Klaas's three-point basket brought UWP within 33-28.

UW-Stout clung to a 40-32 halftime lead, then exploded out of the gates again, scoring the first 11 points of the second half. The closest UWP came was within 59-48 on Stacia Nemitz's jump shot.

The Blue Devils improved to 10-8 overall and 5-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Pioneers fell to 5-12, 2-7.

UW-Stout's Hirssig led everyone with 37 points and 10 rebounds, tying for the 15th highest scoring total in WIAC history. Hirssig, who had 27 points and 10 rebounds in the Jan. 3 73-52 Blue Devil win at UWP, made 13 of her 14 shots Saturday.

Lisa Grantman led the Pioneers with 14 points, while Stotmeister scored 9 and Klaas 8.
