Mount Mercy runs away from UWP

December 30, 2008

Mount Mercy College held UW-Platteville without a field goal over the final 10:04, pulling away from the Pioneers for a 79-64 victory Tuesday in the Clarke College Tournament.

The 3-7 Pioneers will face the host Crusaders in the consolation game Wednesday at 3 p.m.

UW-Platteville shot 67 percent in a back-and-forth first half that saw the Mustangs take a 50-42 lead. The short-handed Pioneers, without injured starters Ashley Callahan and Vanessa Nemitz, made just 5-31 shots (16 percent) in the second half. UWP was within 55-51 with 12 minutes to play, but then only Abby Walker and Charity Stotmeister made baskets the rest of the way. Stotmeister's jumper brought UWP within 63-56, but Mount Mercy ran off 12 straight points.

"If games were only six minutes long, we would have won that one," joked Lisa Grantman, the lone senior before turning serious. "We need to come together and communicate a little better on the floor. We need to get the troubled stuff under control and tune it up more. We definitely have potential, that's for sure. We just have to put it together over the whole game."

Brianna Klaas, making her first start since Dec. 2, 2006, scored a team-high 18 points, while Stacia Nemitz added 12, and Grantman had 11.

Mount Mercy (10-4) was led by Heather Bachman with 18, Jessie Dirks with 17 and Shanda Novak with 16.
