Pioneers open home season

Coe College spoiled UW-Platteville's home opener Tuesday, beating the Pioneers 72-59.

The Kohawks, a 20-win team a year ago, used a decisive 19-3 run to break open a tight game. Sarah Anciaux scored seven points in the run that pushed a 43-40 advantage to 62-43. The Pioneers clawed back within 10 three times in the final four minutes but could get no closer.

Stacia Nemetz led four Pioneers in double figures with 14 points, while Lisa Grantman had 13, Charity Stotmeister 11, and Ashley Callahan 10. Nemitz and Callahan each grabbed eight rbounds, while Stotmeister had four steals.

Kayla Lincoln led Coe (now 3-2) wiht 14 points, and Anciaux finished with 13, while Kayla Waskow added 11. The Kohawks out-shot the Pioneers in the second half 50 percent to 21.4 percent.

The Pioneers (2-2) play eight straight road contests, beginning with the Buena Vista Classic this weekend. UWP faces the host school Friday at 7:30 and SImpson Saturday at 2 p.m.
