Pioneers fall to Pointers

February 14, 2007

Just when it seemed UW-Platteville got its foot back in the door, UW-Stevens Point slammed it shut.

The Pointers used a late 17-4 run to pull away from the Pioneers and win 76-65 Wednesday on UW-Platteville's Bo Ryan Court.

UWSP led by as much as 20 at 43-23 before the Pioneers raced back within nine. UWP was within 52-43 with 9:29 to play on two Liz Tesch free throws before the Pointers started that 17-4 run. Haley Haughton had five points during that key stretch, including a three-point basket that extended the margin to 69-47 with 5:52 left. The Pioneers used a 10-1 run to get back with 74-65 with 37 seconds left but Megan Pehler made two free throws two seconds later to seal the game.

The Pointers improved to 17-6 overall and 9-6 in the WIAC, while the Pioneers fell to 9-15, 3-12.

Janelle Van Gomple paced a balanced Pointer attack with 16 points, while Chelsea Kranz and Haley Houghton each had 14, while Jessi Sporli had 10 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Katie Webber also recorded six assists.

UWSP's Nathalie Lechault blocked two shots, tying the all-time WIAC career record of 320, set by UW-Platteville's Pam Soman in 1986-89.

Liz Tesch led the Pioneers with 26 points, making 10-11 from the line. In the last three games, the senior center has knocked down 27 of 29 free throws. Lisa Grantman added 13 points and four steals, while Lisa Wubben dished out six assists.

The Pointers shot 57 percent from the field (31-54) but only 46 percent from the line (8-17). The Pioneers were held to 36 percent from the field (21-59) but made 91 percent of their free throws (21-23).

UWP closes the regular season Saturday vs. UW-Oshkosh at 7 p.m. on Bo Ryan Court.
