Pioneers grab seventh seed with win

UW-Platteville overcame a 16-point second-half deficit to defeat UW-Oshkosh 60-56 and grab the seventh seed in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Pioneers open the WIAC playoffs Monday at second-seeded UW-Whitewater, while the eight-seeded Titans travel to top-seed UW-Stout. All playoff games begin at 7 p.m.

Freshman Liz Wisdom scored a career-high 23 points and matched her career-best with 13 rebounds, while Lisa Grantman scored 17 of her 19 points in the second half to pace the Pioneers.

With the Pioneers trailing 32-16, Grantman had 14 points in a 23-7 run that tied the score at 39-39. The sophomore broke a 53-53 tie with a layup with 1:43 remining, then added a three-point shot with 42.5 seconds left for a 58-53 advantage.

The Titans' Jessica Abitz attempted--and made--her first three-point attempt of the year, bringing UWO within 59-56 with 20 seconds left, but the Pioneers Liz Tesch sealed the game with one of two free throws with 17 seconds remaining.

UWP improved to 10-15 overall, while UWO fell to 8-15. Both teams finished 4-12 in WIAC play.

Tesch, who was saluted along with Kendra Gohr prior to the game on senior night, finished with 10 points, while freshman Megan Guernsey added five assists.

Whitney Tyriver led the Titans with 17 points, while Jenna Southworth added 15. Both Abitz and Becky Knapp had seven points and eight rebounds.
