Pioneers edged on the road

UW-La Crosse remained perfect in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play by edging visiting UW-Platteville 60-56 Wednesday night in Mitchell Hall.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 12-2 lead and led the entire first half, settling for a 25-23 lead at the break. With the game tied at 34, the Eagles go on a 14-5 run that makes the count 44-39. The Pioneers whittled the lead away to 57-53 but Nicole Palmer made two free throws with 34 seconds left for a 59-53 advantage. After Ashley Wagner made one of two free throws for a 60-53 lead, the Pioneers Liz Tesch made a three-point basket with 12 seconds remaining. Palmer missed two free throws with nine seconds left, but UWP could not convert on the other end.

The Eagles improved to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in the conference, while the Pioneers fell to 4-4, 0-2.

Sophomore Lisa Grantman returned to the lineup after missing two games, but freshman starting guard Brianna Klaas missed the game due to an injury. Coach Tina Kuhle started a big lineup, with 6-foot senior Tesch recording 16 points and 10 rebounds, and 6-2 freshman Liz Wisdom getting 12 points, 13 rebounds and 4 blocked shots.

Mackenzie Hunter paced the Eagles with 16 points, while Katy Searing had 11 points and 13 boards, and Wagner scored 10.
