Pioneers reverse fortunes vs. UW-Whitewater

February 1, 2006

UW-Platteville broke its five-game losing streak against the team that began the skid, as the Pioneers beat UW-Whitewater 59-56 Wednesday in Williams Fieldhouse.

The Pioneers, who lost 79-50 in Whitewater Jan. 11, reversed their fortunes with timely shooting and a key steal late in the game.

UWP led 41-31 before the Warhawks started coming back. UW-Whitewater eventually cut the deficit to a single point at 53-52 with 1:23 remaining. Holly Kaiser then scored on a jump shot with 42 seconds remaining, then stole the ball on the Warhawks' next possession. Emily Adrian was fouled and made both free throws with 28 ticks left for a 57-52 Pioneer advantage.

The teams traded points until the final seconds. The Warhawks rebounded a Pioneer missed free throw and pushed the ball up the court. Trisha Thilla's three-point attempt from the top of the key bounced off the rim at the buzzer.

The Pioneers improved to 9-10 overall and 5-6 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Warhawks fell to 10-10, 4-7.

Liz Tesch led the Pioneers with 22 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three blocks, while Kaiser scored 12 points, and Adrian finished with 10 points and four assists.

Lindsey Buechner led the Warhawks with 18 points, while Jessica Wendt had 12 points, and Amy Morris 11.

The Pioneers shot 48.9 percent from the game, while making 16 assists on 22 field goals. The Warhawks were limited to 39 percent from the floor.
