Pointers pull away in second half

UW-Stevens Point shot 69 percent in the second half and pulled away from a deadlocked game to beat visiting UW-Platteville 81-65 Wednesday night in Berg Gymnasium.

The Pioneers led the entire first half before the Pointers' Cassandra Schultz tied the score 26-26 on a layup five seconds before halftime. UWSP then made its first seven shots of the second half for a 42-37 advantage.

The Pioneers still were within five at 54-49, but the Pointers scored eight straight points and the lead remained in double digits the rest of the way.

UW-Stevens Point improved to 17-7 overall and 10-5 in the WIAC, while UW-Platteville dropped to 10-13, 6-9.

Holly Kaiser led four Pioneers in double figures with 19 points, while Liz Tesch added 17 points, Lisa Grantman 12 and Emily Adrian 10. Grantman also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds from her guard position.

Schultz paced all scorers with 25 points, while Laura Neuendfeldt added 14 and Natalie Lechault 12. The Pointers made 18-26 from the floor in the final 20 minutes and finished the game shooting 60 percent overall.

The Pioneers close their regular season at UW-Oshkosh Saturday at 5 p.m. then begin the conference playoffs Monday on the road. The playoff pairings will be determined Saturday night.
