Pioneers shock UW-Stout

Dec. 3, 2005

UW-Platteville pulled off one of its biggest women's basketball wins in program history, upsetting eighth-ranked UW-Stout 63-54 Saturday in Johnson Fieldhouse in Menomonie.

The Pioneers stopped the defending Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion and preseason favorite to repeat, with a stellar defensive effort. The WIAC's leader in defense held the league's top offensive team 27 points below its season average.

UW-Platteville improved to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in the WIAC, while the Blue Devils fell to 4-2, 1-1.

The Pioneers broke an 18-game losing streak in Johnson Fieldhouse, dating back to the 1990 season.

Holly Kaiser led the scoring with a career-best 25 points, but it was an entire team effort that led to the upset. Despite starting freshmen guards Lisa Grantman and Stacia Nemitz against the vaunted Blue Devil press, the Pioneers handled the ball well and won the turnover battle.

The Pioneers play their next two games at home, facing UW-La Crosse Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. and UW-River Falls Saturday at 7 p.m.
