St. Ambrose beats Pioneers by one

St. Ambrose edged UW-Platteville 55-54 Tuesday, the fifth time in the last six years the final score has been three points or closer.

The Queen Bees won their fifth straight game, improving to 5-1, while the Pioneers slipped to 1-2.

Liz Tech scored 12 points, while Michelle Hardyman and Holly Kaiser each had 11 for the Pioneers, who are without injured starting guards Emily Adrian and Lisa Wubben.

Jennifer Goetz led St. Ambrose with 25 points, including the go-ahead basket with 3:09 to play, giving the Bees a 52-50 lead. Jena Zientak grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Pioneers are back in action this weekend at the University of Dubuque in the Mississippi River Challenge. UWP faces the host Spartans Friday at 6 p.m. and Loras Saturday at 1 p.m.
