Pioneers go 2-0 in Challenge

UW-Platteville remained perfect in three years of the Mississippi River Challenge, downing Loras 65-61 to conclude the two-day event Saturday at the University of Dubuque.

The Pioneers broke open a close game with a 20-4 run in the second half, opening up a 60-45 advantage. The Duhawks came no close than the final score the rest of the way.

UWP improved to 3-2 overall, while Loras fell to 0-4. Freshman Lisa Grantman led a balanced Pioneer attack with 16 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists. Michelle Hardyman and Jessica Brandau each made three three-point shots against the Loras zone and finished with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Holly Kaiser added 11 points, making 7-8 free throws.

Blair Bennett made 5-7 three-point shots and led Loras with 22 points.

The Pioneers have their home opener Wednesday vs. AUgustana (Ill.) at 6 p.m. The men face Elmhurst at 8 p.m., and one ticket is good for both contests.

Defense keys win over Spartans

UW-Platteville held host University of Dubuque to four second-half baskets and beat the Spartans 48-37 Friday during the first night of the Mississippi River Challenge.

The Pioneers broke away from a 21-21 halftime tie with a 9-1 run and never trailed again. Holly Kaiser had three baskets, and Lisa Grantman drained a three-point shot to account for those nine points.

Kaiser led all scorers with 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Grantman and Jena Dietzman each had 10 rebounds, as the Pioneers enjoyed a 52-36 advantage on the boards.

The Spartans, who were held to 22.6 percent from the field, were led by Taylor FOltz's 10 points.

UWP improved to 2-2, while the Spartans fell to 1-2. The Pioneers face Loras Saturday at 1 p.m. at UD.
