Pioneers fall to UW-Eau Claire

January 14, 2006

Every time UW-Platteville saw a window of opportunity, UW-Eau Claire slammed it shut Saturday in Williams Fieldhouse.

The Pioneers sliced 12-point margins down to six on four occasions before the Blugolds prevailed 71-60 in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest.

UW-Eau Claire improved to 7-9 overall and 2-5 in the WIAC, while the Pioneers fell to 8-7, 4-3.

The Pioneers, who trailed by as many as a dozen points in the first half, cut the halftime deficit to 33-29. They spent the second half much the same way, allowing the Blugolds to build the big lead before coming back within six points. The final time was cutting a 64-52 deficit down to 65-59 on Kendall Christian's steal and layup with 1:32 remaining. UWEC's Heidi Aricszewski, Liz Van Drasek and Amanda Zenner all made a pair of free throws in the final 50 seconds to thwart the rally and seal the win.

Arciszewski led all scorers with 21 points, while Holly Kaiser and Liz Tesch paced the Pioneers with 18 and 17 points, respectively. UWP freshman Lisa Grantman added seven points, nine rebounds, three assists and a steal.

The Pioneers return to Williams Fieldhouse Wednesday to face UW-Stevens Point at 7 p.m.
