Pioneers fall short vs. Augustana

Augustana held off UW-Platteville 60-54 Wednesday night to spoil the Pioneers' home opener.

The Pioneers rallied from a 12-point deficit in the final six minutes to come within two points twice in the final minute. UWP cut the lead to 56-54, but the Vikings Kelly Sikora made a pair of free throws for a 58-54 lead with 27.4 seconds to play. Kim Rymer added two more insurance free throws with 4.7 seconds remaining for the final 60-54 margin.

Holly Kaiser led the Pioneers (3-3) with 20 points, while Liz Tesch scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Both Michelle Hardyman and Lisa Grantman made three-point baskets to key the Pioneer rally.

Sikora led all scorers with 19 points for the Vikings (2-2), while Jessoni Please added 11, and Maegan Skahill recorded 10 points and 10 rebounds.

UWP opens the conference season Saturday at 3 p.m. against defending champion UW-Stout in Menomonie.
