Pointers pull away late

February 21, 2005

Second-seeded UW-Stevens Point used a 12-0 run midway through the second half to overcome a 42-40 UW-Platteville lead and beat the game seventh-seeded Pioneers 65-56 Monday in UWSP's Berg Gymnasium.

The Pointers, now 21-5, will advance to Wednesday's semifinal vs. UW-Oshkosh, also 21-5. The Pioneers finish their initial season under first-year coach Tina Kuhle at 13-13.

UW-Platteville played the conference co-champions even for the first 25 minutes. The Pioneers led 34-32 at the half and still held the two-point lead at 42-40 on Holly Kaiser's basket at 14:14. The Pointers, however, scored the next 12 points over a four-minute span to take a 10-point advantage.

The Pioneers, as they had all night, hung tough and battled back. UWP came back within 52-46, but Hailey Houghton's three-point basket pushed the Pointer lead back to nine points with 5:28 to play. The Pioneers came within six again twice in the final 1:07 but could get no closer.

Kaiser led the Pioneers with 18 points, while Shannon Boatman added 12 points and nine rebounds in her final Pioneer appearance. Lisa Wubben scored 10 points, while Liz Tesch added eight in her first start.

Amy Scott poured in 19 points, while Cassandra Schultz added 10 for the Pointers.

The Pioneers lose just one senior, Shannon Boatman, from this year's squad. Boatman finished her career leading the WIAC in rebounds at eight per game this season.
