Pioneers down Warhawks

February 15, 2005

UW-Platteville outscored UW-Whitewater 7-1 down the stretch to beat the Warhawks 52-50 Tuesday night.

The Pioneers trailed 49-45 after the Warhawks' Jessica Wendt scored a basket and free throw with 4:21 remaining. That basket, however, was the last the Warhawks would score the rest of the game.

Lisa Wubben nailed a three-point shot with 4:07 to play, bringing the Pioneers within one point. Holly Kaiser finished her perfect night shooting with a layin, giving the Pioneers a 50-49 lead with 1:50 to play. Liz Tesch made a jump shot 46 seconds later for a 52-50 lead.

UWW's Nya Geschke made one of two free shots with 49 seconds left, but the Warhawks could not get the tying basket. The Warhawks inbounded the ball at halfcourt with just under five ticks remaining, but committed a traveling violation with 1.7 left. The Pioneers then ran out the clock.

UWP improved to 13-11 overall and 6-9 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. The Warhawks fell to 14-11, 7-9.

Kaiser, who was 7-7 from the field, and Tesch led the Pioneers with 14 points, while Wubben finished with 11. Shannon Boatman, the lone senior who was saluted before the game, had nine points, eight rebounds and five assists in her final Williams Fieldhouse appearance.

Sarah Immel led UW-Whitewater with 14 points, while Wendt had nine points and nine rebounds.
