Pioneers fall in WIAC opener

Dec. 1, 2004

Opening the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season on the road against the defending WIAC tournament champions and preseason favorites proved too tall of a task for UW-Platteville, as the Pioneers lost 68-43 at UW-Stevens Point Wednesday.

The Pioneers trailed by just one point, 20-19, at halftime, but the Pointers outscored them 48-24 in the final 20 minutes. UWSP, an NCAA Final Four team last year, shot 67 percent from the field in the second half.

Shannon Boatman led the Pioneers with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Holly Kaiser added 10 points for the Pioneers, who fell to 2-2 overall.

Amanda Nechuta and Chelsea Krantz each scored 14 points for the Pointers (5-1). Laura Neuenfeldt scored 11, including a pair of three-point baskets to make the game a double-digit affair in the second half.

The Pioneers face UW-Superior at Williams Fieldhouse Saturday at 3:30 p.m., following the men's 1 p.m. game with the Yellowjackets. One ticket is good for both games.
