Pioneers rout Mount Mercy

Dec. 27, 2004

A red-hot UW-Platteville women's basketball team routed Mount Mercy 77-35 in the first round of the eight-team Clarke College Holiday Tournament Monday afternoon in Dubuque.

The Pioneers connected on 60 percent of their shots, including 8 of 11 three-point attempts, in rolling to their fifth straight win. UWP will face host Clarke in Wednesday's semifinal matchup at 5:45 p.m. UW-Platteville will conclude the tournament with either the championship game or third-place contest on New Year's Eve.

The Pioneers led just 14-12 eight minutes into the game, but then scored the next 11 points and never trailed again. UWP led 33-18 at the half, then continued to expand the margin in the second half.

Holly Kaiser paced the balanced attack with 16 points, five rebounds and five assists, earning the Player of the Game Award from tournament officials. Michelle Hardyman scored all 11 of her points in the first half. She made all three of her three-point attempts and forced the Mustangs to extend the defense, which thereby opened up the lane for layups. Shannon Boatman added 10 points and a game-high eight rebounds.

UW-Platteville held Mount Mercy to 25 percent from the field and grabbed a commanding 41-22 advantage in rebounding.

The Pioneers improved to 7-2 overall, while the Mustangs fell to 5-10.
