Pioneers fall to UW-Eau Claire

UW-Eau Claire held UW-Platteville to four field goals in the first 18 minutes of the game, then held off all Pioneers rallies to post a 59-52 win Saturday in Williams Fieldhouse.

The Blugolds built a 28-13 lead in those first 18 minutes, then settled for a 32-19 halftime advantage.

The Pioneers cut the lead to six points three times late in the game, but each time the Blugolds answered. Michelle Hardyman's three-point basket brought UWP within 49-43, but Emilee Planert scored a basket and foul shot. After Lisa Wubben made four straight free throws to rally the Pioneers with 54-48, Becca Carstensen knocked home a huge three-point shot for a 57-48 UWEC lead. Two Abby Lalko free throws brought the Pioneers within 58-52 with 18 seconds left, but Becca Carstensen made one of two free shots for the final margin to seal the win.

The Blugolds improved to 11-7 overall and 4-5 in the WIAC, while the Pioneers fell to 10-7, 3-6.

Shannon Boatman led the Pioneers with 14 points and 14 rebounds, while Holly kaiser and Wubben each scored 12.

Planert led the Blugolds with 13 points, while Michelle Burns added 10.

The Pioneers are home for two more games, Tuesday vs. UW-Stevens Point at 7 p.m. and Saturday vs. Thomas More (Ky.) at 3 p.m.
