Pioneers' fall short at UW-Eau Claire

January 8, 2005

UW-Eau Claire held off a late UW-Platteville rally to defeat the visiting Pioneers 62-54 Saturday night.

The Pioneers cut a 54-41 Blugold lead down to 54-50 with 2:39 remaining. Lisa Wubben, Rachel Korth, Holly Kaiser and Liz Tesch all scored during the 9-0 run, with Wubben converting a basket and foul shot to start the strreak. UWEC's Jessica Dickey and Becca Carstensen answered with key back-to-back hoops to answer the Pioneer rally.

The Blugolds improved to 10-4 overall and 3-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Pioneers fell to 9-4, 2-3 after their fifth straight road game. UWP has played just three of its first 14 games at home.

The Blugolds led 32-21 at the half, thanks to Joanna Leafblad's three-point basket at the buzzer. The Pioneers began the second half with a 12-4 run, cutting the lead to 36-33. UWEC countered with six straight points to hold off that run and force the Pioneers to play catchup.

Shannon Boatman led the Pioneers with 10 points, while Kaiser had nine points and nine rebounds.

The Blugolds' Michelle Burns led all scorers with 17 points, while Dickey added 14.

UW-Platteville is home for the rest of January, playing six straight in Williams Fieldhouse. The Pioneers play host to UW-La Crosse Wednesday at 5:45 p.m.
