Pioneers Dealt Close Loss To No. 24 Millikin Tuesday

The Pioneers led 21-11 after a strong first quarter which saw the team force 10 Millikin turnovers. Junior Brynlee Nelson went a perfect 4-of-4 shooting in the frame, scoring nine points, including a couple layups in transition. The Big Blue answered with a 22-9 second quarter, highlighted by a 12-point run across the final three minutes, to hold a 33-30 advantage at the break.
Millikin led for much of the third quarter until back-to-back threes by senior Brianna Prieve and sophomore Madalyn Reichmann in the final minutes pushed the Pioneers in front 49-47. UW-Platteville held a slim lead for much of the fourth, with Reichmann and junior Barb Kling coming up with big triples to maintain the advantage. The Big Blue responded by scoring nine straight to lead 69-63 with 2:26 left, and the Pioneers were only able to get as close as one in the 73-68 loss.
Nelson led three Pioneers in double figures with a season-high 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Senior Sarah Mueller added 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds and five assists, while Kling also reached double digits with 10 points.
UW-Platteville shot 46.6 percent (27-of-58) from the floor in the game and 36.8 percent (7-of-19) from beyond the arc. The Pioneers were especially strong in the second half, shooting 51.7 percent (15-of-29) from the field along with 41.7 percent (5-of-12) from deep.
The Pioneers will be off until Saturday, December 2 when they travel to Loras for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
