Pioneers Raise $11,100 for Pediatric Cancer Awareness Games

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's basketball team fell 56-65 against Loras College Saturday on Bo Ryan Court.
The women's basketball team's competition against the Duhawks was game one of the day's double header in support of pediatric cancer awareness. Overall, $11,103 for pediatric cancer awareness was raised through events at the game and events leading up to that day. Teams wore yellow shoe laces and warm-up shirts in support of the day's events. The teams competed in front of a packed crowd and offered opportunities for fans to support the cause including a halftime shootout, donation miracle minutes, and t-shirt sales.
There were also two checks presented at halftime of the men's game. The first check was presented to the American Family Children's Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin for $3,000 from the local family and friends of the community. The second check was presented to the American Family Children's Hospital from Northwestern Mutual for the amount of $5,000.
The Pioneers (4-4) weren't able to finish after trimming a 17-point Duhawk (5-3) lead down to two in the third quarter. The Pioneers trailed 33-16 and called a timeout with 2:07 remaining in the 2nd quarter. Sophomore Maiah Domask promptly scored four of the team's six unanswered points to cut the lead down to 11 at halftime.
Sophomore Caitlyn Tipton and junior Morgan Horstman together scored nine unanswered points in the 3rd quarter to cut the lead to 41-39. The Pioneers trailed by just two points as late as 2:07 when the Duhawks pulled away.
Domask lead all Pioneer scorers with 17 points and she added 11 rebounds to register a double-double. Tipton finished with 11 points and Horstman added 10 points and two steals.
Junior Rachel Emendorfer and senior Kassie Buchholz lead the defense and each had four steals.
The Pioneers travel to play Cornell on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 1:00 pm.
