Hartman scores 17 in narrow loss to #21 UW–Whitewater
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — Senior guard Morgan Hartman (Rochester, Minn.) scored a team-high 17 points to lead four Pioneers in double figures, but the 21st-ranked University of Wisconsin–Whitewater escaped Williams Fieldhouse with a narrow 77–72 victory over UW–Platteville Saturday afternoon.
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — Senior guard Morgan Hartman (Rochester, Minn.) scored a team-high 17 points to lead four Pioneers in double figures, but the 21st-ranked University of Wisconsin–Whitewater escaped Williams Fieldhouse with a narrow 77–72 victory over UW–Platteville Saturday afternoon.
Hartman made her third 3-pointer of the game with 11 seconds left to pull the Pioneers within three at 75–72, but Reilly Stewart made a pair of free throws with six seconds to lift the visiting Warhawks (13–1, 4–0 WIAC) to their 13th victory of the season. Whitewater made 5 of 6 from the line in the final 45 seconds to hold off any potential comeback.
UW–Platteville fell to 5–10 overall and 1–3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Senior Allison Prestegaard (Amboy, Ill.) added 16 points, a game-high 12 rebounds and five blocks for the Pioneers. Sophomore point guard Morgan Horstman (Bangor) finished with 16 points and nine boards, while sophomore forward Lexis Macomber (Lanark, Ill.) chipped in 11 points off the bench.
Brooke Trewyn scored a game-high 28 points, to go along with eight rebounds and a game-high five steals to lead UW–Whitewater. Stewart and Malia Smith scored 12 points apiece for the winners.
UW–Platteville led by as many as eight points in the first half at 36–28 on a pair of Hartman free throws with 2:27 left in the half. The Pioneers made 21 of 24 (88 percent) from the line in the game.
But the Warhawks scored the final six points of the second quarter, then opened the second half on a 19–6 run to take control of the game at 53–42.
UW–Platteville will return to action Wednesday at UW–Stevens Point at 7 p.m. The Pointers improved to 11–4 overall and 3–1 in the WIAC with a64–48 victory over UW–River Falls on Saturday.
