Women's Basketball opens WIAC Tourney at UW-Stevens Point
The UW-Platteville women's basketball team travels to UW-Stevens Point on Tuesday for the first-round of the 2014 WIAC Championship.
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's basketball team travels to UW-Stevens Point on Tuesday for the first-round of the 2014 WIAC Championship.
UW-Platteville ended the regular season 13-12 and 7-9 in WIAC play, finishing tied for fourth in the standings. The last time the Pioneers finished fourth or higher in the league standings was in 1989-90.
The Pioneers swept the Pointers this year for the first time since 1995. The last time out against UWSP, the Pioneers shot a season best 69.6 percent (16-23) in the second half. Stacy Clark and Alyssa Krajco combined to score 35 of the Pioneers 43 second period points. Clark ended her night with a game-high 17 points, while Krajco added 16 points.
Pioneer tournament history
• The Pioneers are in the WIAC Tournament for the first time since 2008.
• UW-Platteville is 2-8 all-time in the first round of the league tournament with its last win coming at UW-Whitewater in 2008 as the seven-seed.
• Platteville is 3-10 all-time in the tournament and had its best run in 2001 when they advanced to the WIAC Championship game after beating UW-Oshkosh and UW-Stevens Point as the seventh-seed.
• The Pioneers have only been the sixth-seed once and fell to UW-Whitewater, 67-45, in 2000.
• The last time UW-Platteville saw the Pointers in the WIAC Tournament was in 2005, felling to the Pointers 65-56. The Pioneers won their first matchup against UWSP, beating the Pointers 80-78, in the 2001 semifinals.
