The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's basketball team opens the season in Madison, Wis. at the Edgewood Tournament and squares off with Dubuque on Saturday and then Loras on Sunday.
The Pioneers are very young with seven newcomers and returning six letter winners.
BACKCOURT
The Pioneers return guards Melissa Carmody, Rachel Cropp and Taylor Lorbiecki. Carmody is the Pioneers' lone senior and is coming off her junior season averaging 5.2 points per game and 2.7 rebounds. She shot 30 percent from three-point range, and made 24 from beyond the arc. Cropp came off the bench in her rookie season and averaged 20.6 minutes per game. She will be looked to run the Pioneer offense as the starting point guard this year. Lorbiecki averaged 8.5 minutes per game last year and will be competing for a starting spot.
FRONTCOURT
The Pioneers welcome back junior forwards Alyssa Krajco and Taylor Buckmaster and sophomore center Kaitlyn Pleau. Krajoc led last year's team with 10.5 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. She shot an impressive 52.2 percent from the floor and 73.9 percent from the charity stripe. Buckmaster saw limited time last year and will be looked upon to bring some good minutes off the bench. Pleau played in 22 games last year but was limited in minutes to a nagging shoulder injury during the second half of the season. She averaged 4.0 points and 2.2 rebounds per game in her rookie season.
NEWCOMERS
The Pioneers add seven newcomers including five guards and two forwards. They welcome freshmen Mykaela Brandt (Marion, Iowa), Morgan Hartman (Rochester, Minn.), Alyssa Jacobson (Green Bay, Wis.), and Natalie Staples (Cross Plains, Wis.) to the backcourt; as well as transfer Keeley Schulz (Stockton, Ill.). The Pioneers bring in a transfer, Stacy Clark (Riverdale, Iowa) and freshman Kayla Klitzman (Brooklyn, Wis.) to add depth to the frontcourt.
