Pioneers Lose to Dubuque, 67-57
An 12-0 run midway through the second half led the visitors from the University of Dubuque to a 67-57 win over the University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's basketball team on Sunday afternoon.
The loss overshadowed the double double performance of Pioneers' junior Liz Lawinger, who had 15 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and three steals as UW-Platteville falls to 1-2 on the season. Joining Lawinger in double figures was junior Claire Poad, who had a team-high 16 on the strength of four 3 pointers.
Four of the five starters for the Spartans scored in double figures including Aimee Reyzer, who had a game-high 17 to lead Dubuque. The visitors shot 52% from the field in the second half in the come-from-behind win. Dubuque outscored UW-Platteville by a 38 to 16 margin on points in the paint.
UW-Platteville remained in front until the Spartans' Kayla Springer and Jessica Goetz hit back-to-back 3 pointers to put the visitors ahead 42-38 with 11:46 to play. The Pioneers came back to take its final lead of the game when Poad knocked down a 3 pointer with 10:06 to play to wrap up a five-point spurt for a 43-42 lead.
After the 3 pointer by Poad, the Spartans scored 12 unanswered points to take a 54-43 lead with 6:52 remaining. UW-Platteville managed to cut the deficit to as little as five but Dubuque made five of six free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Before entering the Thanksgiving break, the Pioneers will travel to face Luther in Decorah, Iowa on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
