Liz Lawinger Scores a Career-High 30 in Pioneers' 77-69 Loss to Coe
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's basketball team dropped a 77-69 decision to visiting Coe, a team that's receiving votes in the Top 25, on Sunday afternoon at Bo Ryan Court.
On five occasions in the second half, the Pioneers had cut the Kohawks deficit to within a possession. Each time, Coe had an answer to the charge from the Pioneers. A key factor in the answer was that they hit four 3 pointers in the final 20 minutes and kept the Pioneers off the glass.
Despite the loss, Pioneer junior Liz Lawinger scored a career-high 30 points on the strength of four 3 pointers. She was joined in double figures by junior Ashley Henry, who had 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds. The loss drops UW-Platteville to 2-4 on the season.
Coe (2-2) was led by Kayla Waskow, who scored 25 points and had a game-high 11 rebounds to lead the Kohawks. She was joined in dobule figures by Leslie Ware and Megan Hayes, who had 17 and 10 points, respectively. Coe outrebounded UW-Platteville by a 45 to 33 margin in the win.
Facing a 46-38 deficit with 18:31 left in the second half, the Pioneers went on a 9-1 spurt to cut the deficit to one, 47-46. In the spurt, freshman Alyssa Krajco scored four of the points for UW-Platteville. The Kohawks scored the next five points to stretch the lead to six.
However, the Pioneers failed to concede and apply aggressive on-the-ball pressure on their opponents. Later in the half, Lawinger and the Pioneers scored seven-consecutive points, five of which came from the junior from Mineral Point. With a 62-60 lead, Waskow scored on a layup to end the threat for Coe.
The game remained close down the stretch but UW-Platteville would only be able to get as close as three before having to foul down the stretch.
The Pioneers will be back in action on Tuesday, November 29th when they travel to Augustana at 7:30 p.m.
