Pioneers Drop 68-58 Decision to Loras
Despite a 19-2 run by host UW-Platteville, visiting Loras came away with a 68-58 win over the Pioneers in the opening day of the Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday.
The Pioneers (1-1) were led by Liz Lawinger and Claire Poad, who had 13 and 12 points, respectively. Lawinger scored all 13 of her points in the second half after missing most of the first half due to a foul trouble.
The Duhawks (2-0) withstood a 19-2 run by the Pioneers early in the second half in the win. Loras was led by the 31 points by Kelly Rogowski, who was 8-for-10 from the field and 12-for-14 at the free-throw line. She was joined in double figures by Lindsey LaBadie, who added 10.
Lawinger and Jordan Johnson came off the bench to each score five points in the the 19-2 run by the Pioneers. The run by UW-Platteville tied the game at 40 and for the first time since the 16:28 mark of the first half when the contest was tied at 4.
The game remained tied for the next three minutes until the Duhawks' LaBadie made a jumper with 8:45 to play.
Loras took the lead to four but the Pioneers' Danielle Hopkins hit a 3 pointer to cut the deficit to 44-43 with 6:47 remaining. However, the Pioneers would be unable to get a go-ahead basket down the stretch.
The Pioneers will next host Dubuque in the final game of the Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday at Bo Ryan Court at 2:30 p.m.
