Pioneers Fall 67-61 on Senior Day to UW-Stout
University of Wisconsin-Stout scored eight of the final 10 points en route to a 67-61 win to spoil Senior Day for the University of Wisconsin-Platteville women's basketball team.
The Blue Devils (6-15, 2-10) were led by the double double performance from Brea Boomer, who scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the win. Bethany Reyzer and Courtney Hayford added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
In the win, the Blue Devils shot 53.3% from the field and held the Pioneers to 34.9%.
The Pioneers (8-14, 4-9 WIAC) were led by Kim Wellnitz, who had a team-best 15 points. Liz Lawinger had 13 points and a season-high eight assists and Claire Poad had 13 points in the defeat. Plus, Ashley Henry added eight points and eight rebounds.
UW-Stout built a 27-14 lead midway through the first half until an 18-5 spurt by the Pioneers tied the game for the second time with 3:14 to go in the first 20 minutes. UW-Platteville scored the last four points of the half including a jumper by Danielle Hopkins to go into the halftime break with a 41-39 lead.
In the second half, the game would be tied on four occasions, including at 59 with 4:34 left in the game when Poad made one of two free throws. Then, the Blue Devils regained the lead when Boomer scored her first points of the second half on a layup to put the visitors ahead for the remainder of the contest.
The Pioneers would cut the deficit to one, 62-61, when Wellnitz made a layup with 3:02 to go but it would be the final points for UW-Platteville on the afternoon.
Next, UW-Platteville will travel to UW-Whitewater on Wednesday, Feb. 7 for a 7 p.m. contest.
