Kim Wellnitz Scores Career-high 23 to Lead UW-Platteville for 68-63 Win Over UW-Oshkosh
Three members of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville women’s basketball team scored in double figures to lead the Pioneers to a 68-63 win over host UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday night at the Kolf Sports Center in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
The Pioneers (8-11, 4-6 WIAC) were led by a career-high and game-high 23 points from Kim Wellnitz, Ashley Henry and Liz Lawinger each added 17 and 11 points, respectively.
The Titans (7-11, 1-8 WIAC) also had three in double figures as Katie Kitzke scored a team-best 21 points. She was joined in double figures by Heather Conroy and Nichole Paisar, who scored 13 and 12 points, respectively.
UW-Platteville jumped out to a 14-3 advantage to start the game and held a 27-22 advantage at the intermission. At the break, the Pioneers had took advantage of six turnovers by UW-Oshkosh for a 9-2 advantage, plus Henry and Wellnitz combined for 18 points to lead UW-Platteville.
The Titans managed to rally to the game in the second half at 54 but a game-deciding 12-4 spurt put the Pioneers ahead for the remainder of the game. To spark the spurt was Wellnitz, who hit two 3 pointers for part of her 15 points in the final 20 minutes. Plus, the Pioneers made 13 of 15 free throws and shot 54.2% from the field for the victory.
The Pioneers will next travel to UW-River Falls on Saturday for a 3 p.m. tilt.
