Pioneers earn split in UNI-Dome

February 6, 2009

UW-Platteville made its trip to the UNI-Dome memorable Friday, beating Mount Mercy 14-12 in the second game of the earliest softball action in the history of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Mustangs won the opener 10-3 in the Ramada/UNI-Dome Classic, held at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. (Note: because these games were not scheduled to go a full seven innings, they are officially recognized by the NCAA as exhibition contests.)

The Pioneers bolted out to a 6-2 lead in the top of the second in the nightcap. Kerrie Liske knocked in two runs in the first, and Tera Burr and Megan Pozezinski each drove home runs in the second. Chantal McReynolds singled in two more in the fourth, and Courtney Smith did the same in the fifth, helping the Pioneers to 14 runs on 13 hits.

Courtney Ryan, one of 14 freshmen on the 22-player roster, earned the victory on the mound, throwing the first four innings. Amanda Farley came on in the fifth and final inning, as the time limit ended the contest at 12:20 a.m. Saturday.

Calan Nelson's two hits led the Pioneers in the opener. Brittany Stezskal threw four innings of one-hit ball in relief.
