Pioneers split opening games

UW-Platteville split its first two softball games in Tucson, Ariz., falling 10-3 to SUNY-Oneonta and beating Augsburg (Minn.) 5-2 Saturday night.
Freshman Renee Schuttler, who did not pitch in the team's exhibition games in the UNI-Dome Feb. 7 because of an injury to her non-throwing hand, earned the victory in the nightcap.
Schuttler limited the Auggies to five hits in the complete-game performance. Freshman shortstop Chantal McReynolds had three hits, including a double, and first-year player Megan Nelson hit a two-run triple down the right-field line in the fifth, helping the Pioneers to a 5-0 lead.
In the opener, the Red Dragons concluded their spring trip by pounding out 19 hits against a pair of Pioneer freshmen pitchers. Senior Tera Burr homered for the Pioneers, extending her UWP career record to 22.
The Pioneers face Central (Iowa) and Denison Sunday night. UWP is on an eight-game trip to Tucson.
